2008 Newsletter
Art has been an integral part of our existence since the beginning of time. From the old stone age, where archaeologists have found early rock carvings and cave paintings to the New Stone Age where more advanced forms of art, such as pottery, weaving and creative tools have been discovered, we can easily see that the desire to be creative is an innate part of being human.
By observing ancient forms of sculptures, carvings, clothing design and even jewelry, we are able to enjoy a small glimpse into the history of other civilizations before us. Each piece gives us a little story about the life of the artist, their labor of love and even the deepest inner thoughts, feelings, and spiritual beliefs. The creative spirit has never changed since humans first roamed the earth. It is part of us. Everyone has it and it can not be destroyed. It is truly a element of our soul and our divine makeup.
Unfortunately, with the availability of computer games, television, electronics, and the telephone, many of our children and adults too, lose the desire to be creative and become spectators in life rather then active participants. At a very early age, children love to experiment with paints, pencils and crayons often feeling great delight in the simplest of lines, shapes, textures and color. Public schools often cut art from the curriculum because of funding and sadly, many children never pick up a paint brush again. Art gives an understand of relationships and how elements fit together, it can not be separated from the other forms of education. Through creative expression, people gain confidence, increase self esteem, realize the importance of process, and become more thoughtful, reflective human beings.
